Despite the best efforts of the world's great powers to prevent its spread, the idea of Communism continues to grow and gain followers all across the world. It appears that all of the attention being focused on Communism has only made it more attractive for young people and lower-class workers who are dissatisfied with their governments.
At last summer's "Communist Day at Fenway Park," about 5,500 Socialists from all across New England packed the bleachers, waving banners and chanting as the Red Sox defeated the Tigers, 9 runs to 2. This is a huge increase over the estimated 1,500 who came to the event last season. Naysayers argue the larger crowd was just a result of a better team, as the Red Sox won 12 more games last season than they had the year before; Socialists claim their organization is growing.
By far, the largest Socialist group outside of the Netherlands is in Russia, numbering nearly half a million, but making up only a fraction of Russia's massive population. France has the next largest group, as the Socialists have gained the backing of nearly 200,000 Frenchmen who want to end the war with Germany immediately and the cancelled 1913 elections held. Bulgaria, Germany, and Sweden round out the five largest socialist organizations of those who reported their membership to this publication.
It has not been all roses for the International Socialist Movement, though. Communists who were backing the Nationalist Chinese suffered heavy losses at the hands of the Japanese soldiers. Socialists attempting to set a secular agenda for the Ottoman Empire have been rebuffed by Islamic hardliners, whose numbers continue to grow every day the Italians are present in Constantinople.
