ATHENS-
Following the recent withdrawal of Ottoman troops from Northern Greece, the Italian-administered plebiscite was held to determine the future of this small Balkan state. The Greek and Cretan people, when given a choice, soundly rebuked both the Danish-born Monarchy and the Communists who were deposed in 1913.
Instead, over seven in ten voted to re-form Greece as a republic, with Eleftherios Venizelos in charge. Venizelos was Prime Minister of Greece at the time of the revolution, and managed to evade capture and a likely death at the hands of the Communists. The new government is staunchly opposed to monarchies, and supports the incorporation of all ethnically Greek lands into Greece, called the Megale Idea. More than half of the world's Greeks live outside of the borders of Greece.
Thousands of Greeks refused to participate in the plebiscite, citing that it would be illegitimate, as Greeks in the Dodecanese Islands, Thrace, and Macedonia were unable to vote due to continued Turkish oppression.
